Why Taking Melatonin For Sleep Doesn't Always Help You Sleep!
November 11, 2021
Once again you find yourself ready to head to bed. You know that you don't always drift of to sleep as easily as you'd like or stay asleep throughout the night. You may have tried many over the counter remedies to help with this. One of the things I am sure you've tried is melatonin.
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in your brain and also found naturally in certain fruits and nuts. Melatonin regulates your sleep wake cycle and is what contributes to you feeling sleepy at night. Many people go to the heath food store thinking that if they add melatonin to their nightly regimen they will automatically get great sleep. This is not always the case. Yes melatonin can help you get amazing sleep but there are a few things to know before you run down to the store or go online to purchase a bottle of melatonin.
What To Know Before Taking Melatonin...
When you go to the store and look online you notice you have quite a wide range of melatonin products all with varying quantities of melatonin in them. How do you know which one is the correct dose that will allow to get your best night of sleep? It can get quite confusing when you see dosages ranging from less than 1 mg all the way to over 10 mg's.
When it comes to taking melatonin, taking less melatonin actually is more effective than higher doses. At higher doses you can sometimes run into it causing you to fell groggy or as though you have a sleep hangover the next day. Frequently thought, at higher doses melatonin does not help you with sleep, instead it acts solely as very potent antioxidant. As you know antioxidants prevent cell damage and can help prevent premature aging and even some cancers.
If less is more, how much should I be taking?
Studies have shown that taking between 1 mg and 2.5 mg's is optimal when it comes to melatonin. As someone who has been selling various doses of melatonin to customers for decades in the health food store, I have seen that 2 to 2.5 mg's seems to be a good dose most people have success with.
The low down on melatonin...
Try taking less melatonin. If you have been taking 5 mg's try taking half that and suddenly you'll find you begin to sleep better
High doses of melatonin are still beneficial for your health as melatonin is a potent antioxidant and free radical scavenger, preventing cell damage and aging.
Studies have show people with several health conditions that include parkinson's disease, dementia and Multiple Sclerosis seem to be deficient in melatonin. This may be why people with these health conditions tend to have sleep issues as a precursor to the onset of the actual disease
Consuming 2 tbsp's of tart cherry juice in 8 ounces of water twice a day is an effective way to get melatonin naturally from your diet. The melatonin in tart cherries will store in body and release as the night comes on. So you do not need to worry that consuming tart cherry juice will make you tired all day.
Lastly I have created one of the best sleep products out that has just a small amount of melatonin so you never have to worry about taking to much. I have also added some synergistic organic herbs along with minerals and amino acids that help you achieve the best sleep of your life.
I hope you have amazing sleep!
